Videos contained within the FMO website require QuickTime Player.

Software Installation

In order to view the video contained within the FMO website you will need QuickTime Player installed on your computer. You can download the latest version of QuickTime for Windows or for Macs from the Apple website. You can also check the minimum requirements to make sure your computer is compatible with the QuickTime software.

More information about installation and troubleshooting is available on the QuickTime Support web page.

If you are experiencing trouble viewing QuickTime movies with QuickTime Player or the QuickTime browser-plug-in follow the steps below to ensure that QuickTime is properly installed on your Mac or Windows PC.

Installation Check

The first step is to make sure that the QuickTime software is properly installed on your system. If you see the ‘QuickTime successfully installed’ logo on the right, the basic software you need to view movies is installed properly.

Please activate Javascript to fully enjoy QuickTime.

If you see a broken icon above then you should visit the QuickTime download page and reinstall QuickTime.

Streaming Check

If you see an animated QuickTime logo to the right, then your computer is set up to play streaming video. If you do not see an animated QuickTime logo there may be a problem with the way your network is configured. Visit the QuickTime support area for additional help.

Mac OS

If you are using Mac OS then you should already have QuickTime installed.

Windows

If have already installed Apple iTunes, then it is likely that QuickTime has been installed too. Otherwise you will need to download it.

Linux and UNIX

There is no official version of QuickTime Player for computers running Linux or UNIX. If you are using a recent Linux distribution which is based on the GNOME desktop environment (such as Ubuntu), then it should already have the Totem movie player and Gstreamer backend installed, this includes a Mozilla Firefox browser plugin which should allow you to view QuickTime in web pages. If it isn't installed, you can install it by following the instructions on the Totem website. You may also need to install additional gstreamer-plugins such as Pitfdll. Check with your distribution for full instructions of how to playback video.

An alternative is to view the video in Adobe Flash format. On the main page for a video, click on ‘Play video’, then under ‘Other video formats’ on the far right of the page, click on the ‘Flash (Progressive download)’ link.

Quicktime Streaming Quality and Connection Speed

The quality of played over the internet can vary greatly depending on several factors, including overall internet traffic and the speed of your own connection to the Internet. The higher your internet connection speed, the better your viewing experience will be. When QuickTime Player was installed, your connection speed should have been correctly configured to a setting such as modem, ISDN, DSL/broadband or LAN. If you are using the Internet at home you will most likely have either a modem or DSL/broadband connection. If you are accessing the Internet in an office or institution (such as a university) then you probably have a LAN connection. If the video plays badly you should try selecting a lower connection speed in QuickTime:

  • Right click on the movie.
  • Select ‘Plug-in Settings’ from the menu.
  • Click on the ‘Streaming’ tab.
  • Under 'Streaming Speed' select the speed from the drop down menu. Choose either the correct speed if you know it (i.e. ‘256 Kbps / Cable’ if you are using a broadband connection at home), or ‘Automatic’ if you are unsure.
  • Click 'OK'.
  • Reload the web page in your browser (F5 or Ctrl + R (Windows) Cmd + R (Mac)).
  • If you continue to experience problems such as the movie stopping, go back to ‘Plug-in Settings’ and select a slower streaming speed.

Other factors that can affect the quality of video playback include power saving modes on laptops running on battery power. If possible use the laptop from the mains supply or temporarily switch to a higher performance mode. Also running many other applications at the same time might affect playback, in which case try closing unnecessary applications that may be open on your computer.
