Sphere reading materials on FMO
The Sphere Project’s Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response sets out clearly what people affected by disasters have a right to expect from humanitarian assistance. It is a remarkable international initiative aimed at improving the effectiveness and accountability of disaster response. The aim of the Sphere Project is to improve the quality of assistance provided to people affected by disasters, and to enhance the accountability of the humanitarian system in disaster response. The revised edition of the Sphere handbook was published in 2004.
In collaboration with the Sphere Project, FMO have made most of the references and reading materials in the handbook's bibliographies accessible online (in full text). The bibliographies are structured in the same way as they are in the handbook and are divided into the following categories:
Some of these documents have been made available in Portable Document Format () on this website; for others we provide a direct hyperlink () to where the document is available elsewhere online. For the remainder we have as yet been unable to obtain permission from the copyright holder to make them available online, or not obtained a copy for digitization, and so have simply provided a traditional bibliographic reference. The online content will continue to expand.
There are two options for downloading the complete Sphere Handbook text:
- Complete PDF (best for printing): PDF file 2.45 MB
- Separate PDFs of each chapter (smaller downloads): PDF file at top of each chapter bibliography or via the Sphere Project website
To view the PDF documents you will need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader. (Mac OS X users: You can open PDFs using the 'Preview' application which is preinstalled.) Acrobat Reader is available as a free download from the Adobe website.
