Stranded in the desert

Two women walking to the market street whose buildings cast long end-of-day shadows. Until the late 1980s, the Algerians were the primary backers of the Polisario Front in humanitarian and military terms. But with its own economic problems and civil war, Algeria has dramatically cut material aid. Politically though, they remain staunch supporters of the Saharawi cause, although recently there are rumours of them pressuring the Polisario to seek a solution to the conflict in Western Sahara outside the framework of the ailing UN Peace Plan Settlement. This Plan was drawn up in the late 1980s and was agreed to by Morocco and the Polisario Front. It was designed to allow the UN to organize a referendum for Saharawi self-determination and was scheduled to take place in early 1992.
