Refugees need large amounts of wood for cooking meals and building shelters. This can lead to
the rapid destruction of natural vegetation, especially trees, in the vicinity of the camps.

Kibumba houses more than 200,000 refugees. It is the only camp without a water source and must
be supplied by a fleet of 35 tankers bringing 1.5 to 1.6 million liters of water every day.

In April, more than 80,000 refugees were in two makeshift camps 25 and 41 kilometers south of
Kisangani. Thousands more were huddled in small groups, too weak to move, along the road to
Ubundu.

Conditions in the makeshift camp of Biaro are extremely difficult. Many refugees lost their lives
due to the prolonged effects of malnutrition, disease and exhaustion. Others bear machete and
gunshot wounds.

Cholera is endemic in the region. Isolation and rehydration centres have been set up in the
encampments to prevent its spread, and water chlorination points have been installed in areas
where the refugees collect water.

Some 100,000 refugees were located in three major sites along the Ubundu-Kisangani road. They
are all that remain of the 200,000 discovered in makeshift camps in Tingi Tingi, Amisi and
Shabunda in December 1996.

The makeshift camp at Amisi provided temporary shelter for some 40,000 Rwandans. They were forced
to move further west in Feb 97 when Amisi was overrun by the ADFL (Alliance of Democratic Forces
for the Liberation of Congo-Zaire)
