001: Returnees in Kosovo, Fed Rep Yugoslavia

Historical photo set- No.29: Returnees at Sopi, Suva Reka region. Despite appeals for patience
by the humanitarian agencies, 600,000 Kosovars had returned to their shattered province
within three weeks of the signature of the peace plan. A survey showed that in some areas
nearly two thirds of all homes had suffered severe damage or complete destruction.

Children and adolescents constitute some 50% of all refugees assisted by UNHCR. In Kosovo,
their major needs are the reconstruction of schools and catch-up classes to help bridge the
gap in education caused by the exodus.

It is estimated that only a part of Serbia's several hundred thousand refugees will return to
their places of origin. Local integration will be the best durable solution for those who remain.
