Features to enhance the accessibility of this site
These features have been provided to help make our site as accessible as possible to as many people as possible
- All images have been given appropriate alternative text (fully implemented)
- A ‘breadcrumb trail’ navigation feature is provided to help navigation (fully implemented)
- The site has been tested to ensure that it is accessible in a wide range of browsers (partially implemented). See the ‘Known Accessibility Problems’ section below.
Visual Design
- Cascading Style Sheets have been used to control the presentation of pages and properly structured markup has been used for content (partially implemented)
- If stylesheets are not supported or are turned off, information on the site can still be accessed and read (fully implemented)
- Relative font sizes are used, which allows users to resize text as needed (partially implemented)
Standards Compliance
- All HTML will validate as XHTML 1.0 Strict using the W3C markup validator (long term objective)
- All stylesheets should validate using W3C CSS validator (long term objective)
Known Accessibility Problems
We have not have been able to address all barriers to accessibility, the most significant accessibility problems concern the Digital Library section of the web site. The main issues are:
- Browser support, Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows is recommended; users of other browsers may experience problems. Older browsers such as Netscape 4 or older cannot be used to access the library, whereas modern browsers such as Safari, Mozilla or Netscape 7 can be used to access the library, but pages may not always be usable.
- Secondly, the documents are only delivered to the web browser as images in the following formats: web images (GIF or PNG), PDF (Adobe Acrobat Reader or other PDF display software required) or Adobe Flash (Flash Player software required). Therefore the documents are not accessible by using many assistive technologies - such as screen readers.
